Frequently Asked Questions

Flight Instruction FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions for future pilots and clients

General Information

Q: What types of flight training do you offer?
I provide personalised flight instruction for a range of pilot certificates and ratings, including Private Pilot (PPL), Instrument Rating (IR), Commercial Pilot (CPL), Flight Reviews, and proficiency training. I can also offer high performance and complex training in a Piper Turbo Lance located on the field. I tailor each program to your goals—whether you’re pursuing a career in aviation or flying for recreation.

Q: Are you an independent instructor or affiliated with a flight school?
I am a flight instructor who primarily works at Premier Air that also serves private clients with their own aircraft, which means you receive one-on-one, customised instruction in any case. I can train you in your own aircraft (if applicable) or help coordinate aircraft rental through the flight school I work at on the field at IPJ.

Q: Do you provide both ground and flight instruction?
Yes. I offer complete ground and flight instruction, including knowledge test preparation, flight planning, and checkride readiness. Ground sessions can be conducted in person or online. We can even meet at the coffee shop or the library; whichever you prefer!

Getting Started

Q: What are the basic requirements to begin flight training?
To start training toward a Private Pilot Certificate, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old to solo and 17 to earn your certificate

  • Read, speak, write, and understand English

  • Hold a valid FAA medical certificate (at least third class)

I can guide you through each step, including how to schedule your medical exam.

Q: How do I schedule my first lesson or discovery flight?
You can contact me directly to set up an introductory flight lesson. This gives you a hands-on feel for flying and lets us discuss your goals and the best path forward.

Q: How long does it take to get a Private Pilot License?
Training time varies by student availability and weather, but most students complete their PPL in 6–12 months with consistent flying (2–3 lessons per week). FAA minimums are 40 hours, but most pilots average around 60–70 hours.

Costs and Logistics

Q: What are the estimated costs for training?
Total costs depend on the type of aircraft used, frequency of lessons, and your individual progress. I can provide a personalized cost estimate based on your goals. My instruction rates are $60 per hour, plus aircraft rental and any applicable fees. Premier Air offers aircraft rental between $155-$165 per hour wet rate.

Q: Can I use my own airplane for training?
Yes, I can instruct in your personally owned or club aircraft, provided it meets all FAA and insurance requirements.

Q: Do you accept financing or payment plans?
I do not directly offer financing, but I can recommend aviation financing options or scholarship opportunities for qualifying students. Premier Air offers Pilot Finance. They also offer discounts on account credits. If you apply $1,000 to your account using cash or check, you receive $100 free credit on top of that amount per $1,000 applied.

Training & Checkride Preparation

Q: How often should I fly to make steady progress?
Consistency is key. Flying 2–3 times per week helps maintain proficiency and reduces the total hours (and cost) required to reach your goals.

Q: Do you help students prepare for the FAA written and checkride tests?
Absolutely. I provide structured ground training and mock checkrides to ensure you’re confident and well-prepared for both your knowledge and practical exams.

Q: What happens after I earn my certificate?
I offer recurrent training, flight reviews, and advanced instruction to help you stay proficient, safe, and confident as a pilot. Many students continue training for additional ratings or endorsements like the instrument and commercial.

Policies & Miscellaneous

Q: What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or schedule changes to avoid a cancellation fee. This helps me manage scheduling and aircraft availability. Of course, emergencies are an exception.

Q: Are there any prerequisites before our first lesson?
Please bring a valid government ID, your medical certificate (if available), and a positive attitude! I’ll provide any necessary materials or preflight instructions ahead of time.

Q: What should I bring to lessons?
Bring your logbook, headset, and any training materials or charts we’ve discussed. I’ll provide a checklist of recommended gear for new students.
